Quarter 1:

Students will read selected non-fiction to find author's purpose and tone, and to separate fact from opinion
Students will study political or other  advertising to discover standard advertising techniques.
Students will design a political ad, using at least five of the studied techniques.
Students will study vocabulary.
Students will study grammar, usage, and conventions of language to improve writing skills.
Students will write a letter of request/complaint.
Students will use a variety of outlining techniques.
Students will examine a variety of resources, including the Internet.

Quarter 2:

Students will read selected fiction and learn elements of the genre.
Students will form opinions and make inferences and judgments with selected texts.
Students will correctly sequence events in a plot, including plots with flashbacks.
Students will uncover motives of characters and judge their actions.
Students will study vocabulary, language and mechanics.  Students will understand differences between static and dynamic characters, protagonist and antagonist.

Quarter 3:

Students will read selected poetry and analyze for figurative language, unifying devices and content. Students will write poetry in a variety of formats.
Students will read a drama based on a diary.
Students will write a short drama, based on a non-fiction selection or poem.

Quarter 4:

Students will read a novel with a study group to find the elements of the novel.
Students will view the film version of the novel read and compare to the book.
Students will research an aspect of the novel and present findings with a partner to the class.
Students will compare the novel to the short story.
Students will learn the various genres within the novel.
Students will learn to analyze test questions, including analogies.
